Question

Genesis 1:1-1:25

Key Verse 1:1

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

  1. Memorize v. 1. What does "In the beginning" refer to? (Ps 90:2; 102:25-27) What did God do? Why is the word "created" significant? Why is it important for us to know that God created all things? (Isa 44:24)

Before the mountains were born  or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.(Ps90:2)

In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,  and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain;they will all wear out like a garment.Like clothing you will change themand they will be discarded. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.(Ps 102:25-27)

“This is what the Lord says—  your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb:I am the Lord,  the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens,  who spreads out the earth by myself,(Isa 44:24)

  1. Read v. 2. What was the state of things before God spoke? What was the Spirit of God doing? (Ps 104:30)

When you send your Spirit,   they are created,  and you renew the face of the ground(Ps 104:30)

  1. How many times do you find the phrases "and God said...and it was so"? How did God create the world?(Heb 11:3). What does this suggest about God? About his word? (Ps 33:6-9; Jn 1:1-3, Gen.17:1)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.(Heb 11:3)

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,   their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars[a]; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord;  let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be;he commanded, and it stood firm.(Ps 33:6-9)

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to himand said, “I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.(Gen 17:1)

  1. Read vs. 3-31 and draw a diagram showing what was created each day. In the 6 days of creation, is there any external or internal order? What can we learn here?

  2. Find the verses in which the phrase 'according to their kinds' is repeated. What are the things that were created according to their kinds? What can we learn about God?

  3. Find the verses in which the phrase 'And God saw that it was good' is repeated. What does this expression teach us about the purpose of God's creation?
