How Can We Prepare For Post COVID-19?

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Mt 28:19-20)

In this difficult time of COVID-19, we are deeply grateful to our co-workers who have been consistently carrying out the labor of prayer by participating in the 24-hour relay prayer movement organized by the HQ. We are also thankful to those who have sent relief funds for financially suffering missionary co-workers. We thank God for the scent of love that is spreading in our community amid adversity, just as wildflowers bloom in the midst of a drought.

The twentieth century began in 1900 by calendar year, but it may also be said that it began in 1918. This is because modern thought dominated until World War I, but after the war ended, the international order was reorganized and novel ideas marking the new century started forming. So then, when did the 21st century begin? I believe it started four months ago. In February 2020, when the first COVID-19 patients appeared in Europe and North America, humanity entered a new era. We hope that the COVID-19 situation will calm down as soon as possible so that we can return to our daily lives. But many experts say that it is now impossible for us to go back to the pre-COVID-19 time. Even if a vaccine is developed, because COVID-19 is an RNA-type virus, it can mutate into a new form and spread again. In the past, bats were animals living in caves deep in the mountains. But people's reckless destruction of nature has caused the bats in the caves to come out. The coronavirus in those bats has spread to humans either directly or through several intermediate hosts. Currently, there are more than 2.5 million viruses in the body of wild animals. COVID-19 is just one of them. Humanity is still recklessly destroying ecosystems, and we are now feeling the effects of our actions. The continued destruction of nature and the resulting deleterious consequences are inevitable unless the materialism of civilizations and the selfishness of each country pursuing their own national priorities are resolved.

Meanwhile, as people have been unable to move freely, people have begun to look back on their lives. We are realizing that we have produced many items that are not needed, and have been unnecessarily overworked. We have realized that the world has sustained material civilization based on a bubble economy of overproduction. This makes us think about whether we are moving in the right direction as a civilization. Modern civilization, which has driven people to exhaustion due to overproduction and overactivity, is now being forced to correct itself and change its direction. In fact, even before COVID-19, the world was already rapidly changing into an online environment. In 2012, the Minerva School, a start-up university that offers only online classes, was founded. This school has no classrooms and no campus. The tuition is about $10,000 a year, which is about one-fourth of many US private universities. Some people said that it’s more difficult to enter than Harvard because of its high level of education; its acceptance rate in 2017 was 100:1. With such developments, some campus mission leaders have spoken: "We have to reconsider the future direction of going to campus, evangelizing students, and praying on campus, because the campus may disappear." We were called to campus mission. Why campuses? It is because it is the home of education, where many young people who will become the pillars of the nation and society come and go every year, and it is a fertile spiritual fishing ground. When we evangelize students, society, nations, and the whole world can be evangelized. However, these campuses may eventually be gone. In Korea, students who entered the spring semester this year went on to summer break without having to spend a day on campus. This is the new era we are living in. 

The world refuses to change. It is because change makes us anxious and uncomfortable. Many want to hold onto their current status and form of survival while maintaining the existing order. The forces that denied these changes quickly crumbled in the face of COVID-19, which sped up our transition into the upcoming online era. People have complained about their difficulties of having to adapt to this online environment, but on the other hand, those who have been forced to adapt have discovered its benefits. For example, by staying at home, we are realizing that many of us had previously been buried in our work. As we spend more time with our families, we are also restoring our most precious and loving communities at home. Meanwhile, pollution has been reduced and nature is recovering. We don't travel unnecessarily, so we only focus on the important things. As we have more personal time, we are slowing down and engaging more deeply in our day-to-day lives. Even if an effective vaccine is developed in the near future, people may not want to go back to the past because they have adapted to the online environment. Whether we like it or not, COVID-19 is causing major changes not only in our lives, but also throughout the fabric of society, including the ecosystem, urban environment, international order, and economic activity.

In the midst of disaster, we feel like this situation may continue endlessly. However, the current COVID-19 situation will eventually be over. Throughout history, there has been no epidemic that has lasted forever. We also trust in Jesus’ promises written in the Bible. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8); “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15); “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Mt 28:18-20). Jesus’ disciples were commanded to go all over the world to preach the gospel. They were commissioned to be his witnesses. They were ordered to go and baptize in all nations. Therefore, the environment where we can go all over the world and preach the gospel will surely come again. The post-coronavirus era will surely come. Of course, the post-coronavirus era will not be the same as the era pre-coronavirus. The threat and possibility of another epidemic outbreak will always loom ahead, so the new era will turn into an age where online and offline environments coexist. There might also come a time when face-to-face meetings between people are greatly reduced and replaced by online meetings. With this post-coronavirus era in mind, we need to prepare now. What direction should we take in the face of this huge challenge? How can we effectively overcome our current difficulties and prepare for the coming post-coronavirus era?

First, we should believe in God’s love and that he rules history, be thankful, and have a humble heart. Isaiah 55:9 says, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” While we see life from our limited earthly perspective, God sees it from heaven. God knows everything and plans everything according to his sovereignty. There is nothing God cannot do if he intends to do it. This God is our Father who loved us and gave us his only begotten Son. We must believe and thank this God in all things. No bird in the air can fall without God's will. How could there not be God's greater purpose in COVID-19, which has hit the whole world? 

Then, what is his will? There may be many things, but I believe that above all, he wants to humble human beings who have become proud through modern scientific achievements. Though people have built high-rise buildings like the tower of Babel and have traveled to space, God makes us realize that humans are essentially helpless even in the face of invisible viruses. Human beings are like the wind and the dust. Before this sovereign God, we must thoroughly repent of our pride and restore our humble hearts. Most certainly, humility is a blessing. God opposes the proud, but blesses the humble. Humility is holiness and humility is faith. Without humility, we cannot please God. The COVID-19 situation reveals that God loves us deeply and disciplines us. May we believe in God, thank him, and pray with humility.

Second, we should believe in Christ rather than human power. Jesus raised twelve disciples and lived with them for three years. He wanted to make them the foundation of the church and the leaders of the gospel ministry. However, they did not change much despite Jesus’ intensive training. Even at the last supper, they quarreled with each other about who was greater. They swore to never abandon Jesus, but when he was crucified, most of them fled. What was their problem? It was because they wanted to follow the Lord with their own strength. Jesus already knew their weaknesses and promised the Holy Spirit. He told them not to leave Jerusalem but wait for his Father's promised Holy Spirit. Finally, the Holy Spirit came and dwelt in them. The indwelling Holy Spirit began to work through them powerfully. The book of Acts tells us how the Holy Spirit worked through their hearts and their communities to start a revival. Jesus promised his disciples that he would always be with them until the end of the age (Mt 28:20). How is he with us? He is with us through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus. He is the Spirit of Christ who personally accomplishes the work of the gospel. Christ always dwells within us as he promised: “Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?” (2 Co 13:5b).

With COVID-19 putting everything on hold, we reflect on whether we’ve gone too far on our own. We find that we have served God’s work with our own power. In the two-thousand-year history of Christianity, God used our community like the Moravian Mission in the 18th century. But now, we should ask ourselves whether we have been filled with the passion of youth and served with our human zeal, rather than relying on Christ living in each of us and in our community. Rather than wanting to be transformed into humble and holy people who resemble Christ, have we pursued large churches and booming ministries under the influence of mass productivism and a success-oriented mindset? The COVID-19 situation allows us to recognize that the main agent of God's gospel work is the Holy Spirit, not us. We can have a desire to restore the life where we no longer live, but Christ lives in us. Of course, we must be zealous. But that zeal, as St. Augustine said, should be a zeal by thorough acknowledgment of our helplessness, which comes from faith trusting in Christ alone. For “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent” (Jn 6:29). I pray that we can impress the infinite grace of God into our hearts and be grateful to God who still showers his grace upon sinners like us. With this attitude, we should practically learn the faith of relying on Christ dwelling in us. Faith is the sensory organ that connects our soul to the Spirit of God who is in us. I pray that by faith, the life of Christ in us will prevail more and more every day. May we experience and enjoy Christ living in us, not our old selves that have already been crucified with Christ. I pray that the Spirit of Christ will work powerfully in our community until he accomplishes his work in us.

Third, we should actively embrace the online paradigm and raise disciples. The online paradigm is an irreversible trend. Though we may feel uncomfortable with it, we should embrace it and learn with an active mind, as well as utilize mobile and video contents. We should be able to do evangelism, education, public relations, and discipleship online. We need to skillfully use our own smartphones, laptops, and online platforms to train a small number of people. In the meantime, the shift to the online age has given us more personal time. This is God's grace. We can use this time to grow spiritually by reading and reciting the Bible, meditating and praying, and reading books that can edify our faith. Also, we must serve our children with love and God’s truth for them to be good disciples. Children are the object of our love and the most important mission resources. They are the hope of God. I pray that through word and prayer, they may become Jesus’ disciples who can take the gospel faith to the next generation.

Furthermore, we should continue to serve disciples through small group gatherings. In most countries, mass gatherings are currently prohibited. However, it is increasingly possible for small groups to gather. Social distancing does not mean keeping away from everyone. We can still be near our family members, and keep in close contact with disciples. Recently, the world mission HQ is promoting the development of various online contents using YouTube and other platforms. In addition, through the Online Forum, we are planning to support our co-workers to become spiritually equipped. In addition to in-person meetings, we should continue to cultivate small group discipleship meetings through these internet networks.

Fourth, we must look after our co-workers who are facing great difficulties. Many of our co-workers have been suffering from COVID-19 infections. In rare cases, some have passed away. Amid these hardships, many have been supported through the prayers, practical help and love of our coworkers. Despite this, doctors and nurses are still suffering. I pray that God may protect and strengthen the medical workers who are struggling to save lives on the front lines of the pandemic. 

Also, many coworkers from all over the world, including North America and Europe, have sacrificially provided relief funds. Some house church chapters have given as much as they could and even beyond their ability. The total amount of relief offerings, for the last three moths, sent by our co-workers to the HQ is about $235,000. Of these, in early April 2020, we sent about $111,000 to 44 co-workers around the world, according to their financial conditions, and about $45,000 to 31 co-workers in the second relief in late May 2020. There were many heart-moving requests in which co-workers refused to receive relief and wanted HQ to help those experiencing a more difficult time than themselves. Everyone who received support praised God and asked to deliver their deep gratitude to the members of our UBF community. “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor (Psalm 112:9). We believe that the love contained in giving rather than the offering itself becomes an enduring righteousness. Since the COVID-19 situation will continue, we will continue to save money and provide support where it is absolutely necessary. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to those who sent relief funds and ask for their continued prayer and support. As the economy struggles, many people are losing their jobs. In particular, unemployment in the 20s and 30s has emerged as a major social problem. Although this is temporary, this is still a very difficult time for them. “For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen” (1 Jn 4:20b). I pray that we can continue to look after our neighbors as we love God.

Fifth, we must remain awake and pray, knowing that the day of the Lord’s coming is near. Romans 13:11-12 says. “Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.” The longer the time of disaster, the more fearful and anxious people’s hearts become. In these times, each of us must live in the light of love and truth that illuminates this dark time. Instead of being discouraged by this disaster, we should deliver a message of hope to our time with a burning vision and hope for the kingdom of God. One scientist has said that we may be the last generation of humanity on the planet, given the rapid rate of destruction of the global environment. The COVID-19 pandemic must be a sign that the day of the Lord is nearing. The word of the Lord is speaking: "’When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.’ He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.’” (Lk 21:28-31). The HQ World Mission Department is currently conducting a 24-hour prayer relay movement and many people are joining in. I pray that we will be watchmen of our time by living as prayer servants with our heads lifted up towards the throne of God. I believe that God will do good and be glorified even in all these difficulties. 

In conclusion, the present disaster will surely end when God's time comes. We need to prepare for the post-coronavirus era, which is rapidly ushering in an online environment. In this new era, we pray that each of us may become people who are filled with the Spirit of Christ, and that we can give ourselves fully to raising Jesus' disciples by faith.

"¿Cómo Podemos Prepararnos Para la Era Post-COVID-19?"

En este momento difícil de COVID-19, estamos profundamente agradecidos con nuestros colaboradores que han estado llevando a cabo constantemente el trabajo de oración al participar en el movimiento de cadena de oración de 24 horas organizado por la sede; También estamos agradecidos con aquellos que han enviado fondos de ayuda para colaboradores misioneros con problemas financieros. Agradecemos a Dios por el aroma del amor que se está extendiendo en nuestra comunidad en medio de la adversidad, al igual que las flores silvestres florecen en medio de una sequía.

El mundo se niega a cambiar. Es porque el cambio nos pone ansiosos e incómodos. Muchos quieren conservar su estado actual y su forma de supervivencia mientras mantienen el orden existente. Las fuerzas que se negaron a estos cambios se desmoronaron rápidamente frente al COVID-19, lo que aceleró nuestra transición a la próxima era en línea. Las personas se han quejado de sus dificultades para adaptarse a este entorno en línea, pero por otro lado, se han visto obligadas a adaptarse y descubrir sus beneficios. Por ejemplo, al quedarnos en casa, nos damos cuenta de que muchos de nosotros habíamos sido enterrados previamente en nuestro trabajo. A medida que pasamos más tiempo con nuestras familias, también estamos restaurando nuestra comunidad más preciosa y amorosa en el hogar. Mientras tanto, la contaminación se ha reducido y la naturaleza está reviviendo. No viajamos innecesariamente, por lo que solo nos enfocamos en las cosas importantes. A medida que tenemos más tiempo personal, estamos disminuyendo la velocidad y participando más profundamente en nuestra vida cotidiana. En medio del desastre, sentimos que esta situación continuará para siempre. Sin embargo, la situación actual de COVID-19 terminará. Por tanto, id, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo; enseñándoles que guarden todas las cosas que os he mandado; y he aquí yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo. Amén.”(Mt 28:18-20). A los discípulos de Jesús se les ordenó ir por todo el mundo para predicar el evangelio. Fueron comisionados para ser sus testigos. Se les ordenó ir y bautizar en todas las naciones. Por lo tanto, el entorno donde podemos ir por todo el mundo y predicar el evangelio seguramente volverá a llegar. La era posterior al COVID-19 seguramente llegará. Por supuesto, la era posterior al COVID-19  no será igual que la era anterior. La amenaza y la posibilidad de otro brote epidémico siempre están latentes, por lo que la nueva era se convertirá en una era donde los entornos virtuales y presenciales coexisten. También puede llegar un momento en que las reuniones cara a cara entre personas se reduzcan considerablemente y se reemplacen por reuniones en línea. Con esta era posterior al COVID-19 en mente, necesitamos prepararnos ahora. ¿Qué dirección debemos tomar ante este gran desafío? ¿Cómo podemos superar efectivamente nuestras dificultades actuales y prepararnos para la próxima era posterior al COVID-19?

Primero, debemos creer en el Dios de amor que gobierna la historia, estar agradecidos y tener un corazón humilde. Isaías 55:9 dice: “Como son más altos los cielos que la tierra, así son mis caminos más altos que vuestros caminos, y mis pensamientos más que vuestros pensamientos.” Mientras vemos la vida desde nuestra limitada perspectiva terrenal, Dios la ve desde el cielo. Dios lo sabe todo y lo planea todo de acuerdo con su soberanía. No hay nada que Dios no pueda hacer si tiene la intención de hacerlo. Este Dios es nuestro Padre que nos amó y nos dio a su Hijo unigénito. Debemos creer y agradecer a este Dios en todas las cosas. Ningún pájaro en el aire puede caer sin la voluntad de Dios. ¿Cómo podría no haber un propósito superior de Dios en el COVID-19 que ha afectado al mundo entero?

Entonces, ¿cuál es su voluntad? Puede haber muchas cosas, pero creo que, sobre todo, quiere humillar a los seres humanos que se han enorgullecido a través de la civilización científica moderna. Aunque las personas han construido edificios de gran altura como la torre de Babel y han viajado al espacio, Dios nos hace darnos cuenta de que los humanos están esencialmente indefensos incluso ante pequeños virus invisibles. Los seres humanos son como el viento y el polvo. Ante este Dios soberano, debemos arrepentirnos completamente de nuestro orgullo y restaurar nuestros humildes corazones. Ciertamente, la humildad es una bendición. Dios se resiste al altivo, pero bendice al humilde. La humildad es santidad y la humildad es fe. Sin humildad, no podemos agradar a Dios. La situación del COVID-19 revela que Dios nos ama profundamente y nos disciplina. Que podamos creer en Dios, agradecerle y orar con humildad.

En segundo lugar, debemos creer en Cristo en vez del poder humano. Jesús levantó a doce discípulos y vivió con ellos durante 3 años. Quería convertirlos en la base de la iglesia y los líderes del ministerio del evangelio. Sin embargo, no cambiaron mucho a pesar del entrenamiento intensivo bajo Jesús. Incluso en la última cena, se discutían quién era mayor. Juraron nunca abandonar a Jesús, pero cuando Jesús fue crucificado, la mayoría de ellos huyeron. ¿Cuál fue su problema? Fue porque querían seguir al Señor con sus propias fuerzas. Jesús ya conocía sus debilidades y prometió el Espíritu Santo. Les dijo que no abandonaran Jerusalén, sino que esperaran el Espíritu Santo prometido por su Padre. Finalmente, el Espíritu Santo vino y habitó en ellos. El Espíritu Santo que habitaba en ellos comenzó a trabajar a través de ellos poderosamente. El libro de los Hechos nos dice cómo el Espíritu Santo trabajó a través de sus corazones y sus comunidades para comenzar un avivamiento. Jesús prometió a sus discípulos que siempre estaría con ellos hasta el fin del mundo (Mt 28:20). ¿Cómo está Él con nosotros? A través del Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu Santo es el Espíritu de Jesús. Él es el Espíritu de Cristo que realiza personalmente la obra del evangelio. Cristo siempre habita dentro de nosotros como lo prometió: “¿O no os conocéis a vosotros mismos, que Jesucristo está en vosotros, a menos que estéis reprobados?” (2 Co. 13:5b).

Con el COVID-19 pausando todo, reflexionamos sobre si hemos ido demasiado lejos por nuestra cuenta. Encontramos que hemos servido la obra de Dios con nuestro propio poder. En los dos mil años de historia del cristianismo, Dios usó a nuestra comunidad como la Misión de Moravia en el siglo XVIII. Pero ahora deberíamos preguntarnos si hemos sido llenos de la pasión de la juventud y servido con nuestro celo humano, no confiando en que Cristo vive en cada uno de nosotros y en nuestra comunidad. En lugar de querer convertirnos en personas humildes y santas que se parecen a Cristo, ¿hemos procurado iglesias grandes y un ministerio en auge bajo la influencia del productivismo masivo y una mentalidad orientada al éxito? La situación del COVID-19 nos permite reconocer que el agente principal de la obra del evangelio de Dios es el Espíritu Santo, no nosotros. Llegamos a tener el deseo de restaurar la vida donde ya no vivo yo, sino que vive Cristo en mí. Por supuesto, debemos ser celosos. Pero ese celo, como dijo San Agustín, debería ser un celo por el reconocimiento completo de nuestra impotencia, y eso proviene de la fe que confía solo en Cristo. Porque “Esta es la obra de Dios, que creáis en el que él ha enviado.” (Jn 6:29). Ruego que podamos grabar la gracia infinita de Dios en nuestros corazones y estar agradecidos a Dios que todavía derrama su gracia sobre los pecadores como nosotros. Con esta actitud, prácticamente deberíamos aprender la ley de la fe para confiar en que Cristo mora en nosotros. La fe es el órgano sensorial que conecta nuestra alma con el Espíritu de Dios que está en nosotros. Ruego que por fe, la vida de Cristo en nosotros prevalezca más y más cada día. Que podamos experimentar y disfrutar a Cristo viviendo en nosotros, no a nuestros viejos hombres que ya han sido crucificados con Cristo. Oro para que el Espíritu de Cristo trabaje poderosamente en nuestra comunidad hasta que realice su obra en nosotros.

Tercero, deberíamos adoptar activamente el paradigma centrado en la obra en línea y levantar discípulos. El paradigma centrado en línea es una tendencia irreversible. Aunque podemos sentirnos incómodos con él, debemos aceptarlo y aprender con una mente activa, así como utilizar contenidos móviles y de video. Deberíamos hacer evangelismo, educación, relaciones públicas y discipulado en línea. Necesitamos usar hábilmente nuestros propios teléfonos inteligentes, computadoras portátiles y plataformas en línea para capacitar a un pequeño número de personas. Mientras tanto, el cambio a la era en línea nos ha dado más tiempo personal. Esta es la gracia de Dios. Podemos usar este tiempo para crecer espiritualmente leyendo y recitando la Biblia, meditando y orando, y leyendo libros que puedan edificar nuestra fe. Además, debemos servir a nuestros hijos con amor y la verdad de Dios para que sean buenos discípulos. Los niños son el objeto de nuestro amor y los recursos misioneros más importantes. Son la esperanza de Dios. Oro para que a través de la palabra y la oración, se conviertan en discípulos de Jesús que puedan llevar la fe del evangelio a la próxima generación.

Además, debemos continuar sirviendo a los discípulos a través de reuniones de grupos pequeños. En la mayoría de los países, las reuniones masivas están actualmente prohibidas. Sin embargo, cada vez es más posible que pequeños grupos puedan reunirse. El distanciamiento social no significa mantenerse alejado de todos. Todavía podemos estar cerca de los miembros de nuestra familia y mantener un contacto cercano con los discípulos. Recientemente, la sede mundial de la misión está promoviendo el desarrollo de varios contenidos en línea utilizando YouTube y otras plataformas. Además, a través del Foro en línea, estamos planeando apoyar a nuestros colaboradores para que estén equipados espiritualmente. Además de las reuniones en persona, debemos continuar cultivando reuniones de discipulado en grupos pequeños a través de Internet.

Cuarto, debemos cuidar a nuestros colaboradores que enfrentan grandes dificultades. Muchos de nuestros colaboradores han estado sufriendo por la infección por COVID-19. En casos raros, algunos han fallecido. En medio de estas dificultades, muchos han recibido apoyo a través de las oraciones, la ayuda práctica y el amor de sus colaboradores. Sin embargo, los médicos y las enfermeras siguen sufriendo. Oro para que Dios proteja y fortalezca a los trabajadores médicos que luchan por salvar vidas en la primera línea de la pandemia.

Además, muchos colaboradores de todo el mundo, incluidos América del Norte y Europa, han proporcionado fondos de ayuda con sacrificio. Algunos capítulos de Iglesias Hogareñas han dado todo lo que pudieron e incluso más allá de su capacidad. La cantidad total de ofrendas de ayuda enviadas por nuestros colaboradores a la sede es de aproximadamente $235,000. De estos, a principios de abril de 2020, enviamos alrededor de $111,000 a 44 colaboradores en todo el mundo, de acuerdo con sus condiciones financieras, y alrededor de $45,000 a 31 colaboradores en el segundo alivio a fines de mayo de 2020. Hubo muchas solicitudes conmovedoras en las que los colaboradores se negaron a recibir ayuda y querían que la sede central ayudara a quienes experimentaban un momento más difícil que ellos. A medida que la economía lucha, muchas personas pierden sus empleos. En particular, el desempleo entre los que tienen 20 y 30 años se ha convertido en un importante problema social. Aunque esto es coyuntural, es un momento muy difícil para ellos. “Pues el que no ama a su hermano a quien ha visto, ¿cómo puede amar a Dios a quien no ha visto?” (1Jn 4:20b). Oro para que podamos seguir cuidando a nuestros vecinos mientras amamos a Dios.

Quinto, debemos permanecer despiertos y orar, sabiendo que el día de la venida del Señor está cerca. Romanos 13:11-12 dice. “Y esto, conociendo el tiempo, que es ya hora de levantarnos del sueño; porque ahora está más cerca de nosotros nuestra salvación que cuando creímos. La noche está avanzada, y se acerca el día. Desechemos, pues, las obras de las tinieblas, y vistámonos las armas de la luz”. Cuanto más largo es el tiempo del desastre, más temerosos y ansiosos se vuelven los corazones de las personas. En estos tiempos, cada uno de nosotros debe vivir a la luz del amor y la verdad que ilumina este tiempo oscuro. En lugar de desanimarnos por este desastre, debemos entregar un mensaje de esperanza a nuestro tiempo con una visión ardiente y esperanza para el reino del Señor. Un científico ha dicho que podemos ser la última generación de la humanidad en el planeta, dada la rápida tasa de destrucción del ambiente a nivel global. La pandemia del COVID-19 debe ser una señal de que se acerca el día del Señor. La palabra del Señor está hablando: “Cuando estas cosas comiencen a suceder, erguíos y levantad vuestra cabeza, porque vuestra redención está cerca. También les dijo una parábola: Mirad la higuera y todos los árboles. Cuando ya brotan, viéndolo, sabéis por vosotros mismos que el verano está ya cerca. Así también vosotros, cuando veáis que suceden estas cosas, sabed que está cerca el reino de Dios.” (Lc 21:28-31). La Sede de la Misión Mundial está llevando a cabo un movimiento de cadena de oración de 24 horas y muchas personas se están uniendo. Oro para que seamos vigilantes de nuestro tiempo viviendo como siervos de oración con nuestras cabezas levantadas hacia el trono de Dios. Creo que Dios hará el bien y será glorificado incluso en todas estas dificultades.

En conclusión, el desastre actual seguramente terminará cuando llegue el tiempo de Dios. Necesitamos prepararnos para la era posterior al COVID-19, que se está transformando rápidamente en un entorno en línea. En esta nueva era, oramos para que cada uno de nosotros se convierta en personas llenas del Espíritu de Cristo, y podamos entregarnos plenamente a levantar los discípulos de Jesús por fe.

코로나 사태 이후를 대비하여 무엇을 할 것인가?

"그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라"(마 28:19,20)

COVID-19 사태로 어려운 가운데서도 본부의 24시간 릴레이 기도 모임에 참여하여 꾸준히 기도의 노동을 감당해 오고 계시는 동역자님들께, 또한 경제적으로 고난을 당하는 선교 동역자님들을 위해 구제기금을 보내주신 분들께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 가뭄 가운데서도 피어나는 야생 꽃 같이 역경 가운데 피어나는 사랑의 향기가 우리 공동체 가운데 널리 퍼지고 있음을 말미암아 하나님께 감사를 드립니다.

20세기는 달력으로 치면 1900년에 시작되었지만 내용적으로는 1918년에 시작되었습니다. 제1차 세계대전까지는 근대사상이 지배하였지만, 그 전쟁이 끝난 후에 국제질서는 새롭게 개편되었고 새로운 사상이 지배하는 세기가 시작되었기 때문입니다. 그러면 21세기는 언제 시작되었을까요? 저는 2020년 2월에 시작되었다고 생각합니다. 유럽과 북미에 첫 COVID-19 환자가 발생한 2020년 2월, 인류는 새로운 시대를 맞이하게 되었기 때문입니다. 우리는 하루 빨리 COVID-19 사태가 진정되고 과거의 일상으로 돌아가기를 고대합니다. 그러나 많은 학자들은 이제 우리가 COVID-19 사태 이전으로 돌아가는 것은 불가능하다고 말합니다. 백신이 개발되어도 COVID-19 은 RNA형 바이러스라서 변형이 쉽게 되며, 더욱 강한 형태로 바뀌어 인류를 공격할 것이라고 합니다. 과거에 사람들에게 박쥐는 산속 깊은 곳인 동굴에서 사는 말로만 들어본 동물이었습니다. 그러나 사람들의 무분별한 자연 파괴가 동굴 안의 박쥐들을 밖으로 나오게 하였습니다. 그 박쥐들에게 있는 코로나 바이러스가 직접 또는 여러 중간 숙주를 거치면서 인류에게 전염되었습니다. 현재 야생에 서식하는 동물의 몸에 있는 바이러스는 250만종이 넘는다고 합니다. 우리에게 닥친 COVID-19는 그 중에 하나에 불과합니다. 인류는 지금도 무분별하게 생태계를 파괴하고 있으며 생태계는 인류에게 역습을 가하고 있습니다. 인간의 물질 우선주의 문명과 자국 우선주의를 추구하는 각 나라의 이기심이 해결되지 않는 이상 자연의 지속적인 파괴와 이에 따른 반격은 피할 수 없습니다.

한편, 사람들은 원활히 이동하지 못하고 한 곳에 머무는 가운데 자신들의 삶을 돌아보기 시작하였습니다. 그 동안 필요하지도 않은 물건들을 생산하며, 불필요하며 분주하게 이동하였다는 것을 깨닫고 있습니다. 세상은 과잉생산이라는 거품경제에 기초하여 물질문명을 지탱해 왔다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 좀 더 인간다운 삶이 무엇인가를 생각하게 만들고 있습니다. 과잉생산, 과잉활동으로 사람들을 탈진 상태로 몰아 놓았던 현대문명은 이제 큰 궤도 수정을 요구 받고 있습니다. 실상 COVID-19 사태 이전에도 우리가 사는 세상은 이미 빠르게 온라인 환경으로 변화되어 가고 있었습니다. 2012년에 온라인으로만 수업을 진행하는 스타트업 대학교인 미네르바 스쿨이 생겼습니다. 이 학교는 교실이 없습니다. 캠퍼스도 없습니다. 등록금은 미국 일반 사립대의 1/4인 연간 1만 불 정도입니다. 그러나 교육 수준이 높아 하버드보다 들어가기가 어렵다고 합니다. 2017년 입학 경쟁률이 100:1 이었습니다. 이런 현상들을 보면서 몇몇의 캠퍼스 선교단체 리더들은 말했었습니다. "우리가 캠퍼스에 가서 학생들을 전도하고 캠퍼스에서 기도모임을 하는 것에 대해 앞으로의 방향을 생각해 보아야 한다. 왜냐하면 앞으로 캠퍼스가 엎어질 것이기 때문이다." 우리는 캠퍼스 선교에 부르심을 받았습니다. 왜 캠퍼스일까요? 국가와 사회의 기둥이 될 수많은 젊은이들이 매년 들어오고 나가는 교육의 터전이요 영적 황금 어장이기 때문입니다. 이들을 복음화할 때 그 사회와 나라와 전 세계가 복음화 될 수 있기 때문입니다. 그러나 캠퍼스가 없어질 수도 있습니다. 한국의 경우 이번 봄 학기에 입학한 학생들은 캠퍼스 생활을 하루도 해 보지 않고 여름방학에 들어갔습니다. 우리가 지금 그런 시대를 살고 있습니다.

세상은 변화를 거부합니다. 변하면 불안하고 불편하기 때문입니다. 기존의 질서를 유지하는 가운데 자신의 지위와 생존을 이어가는 사람들이 있기 때문입니다. 이러한 변화를 거부하는 세력이 COVID-19로 인해 단번에 무너졌습니다. 다가 올 온라인 시대를 즉각적으로 앞당겼습니다. 온라인 사회에 적응하지 못해 사람들은 어려움을 호소하지만 한편으로는 억지로라도 적응해 나가면서 그에 따른 장점들도 발견합니다. 그 동안 자기를 잃어버리고 기계 속의 부속품처럼 정신 없이 살아왔던 것도 발견합니다. 가족들과 함께 보내는 시간이 많아지면서 가장 귀한 사랑의 공동체를 되찾기도 합니다. 공해가 줄고, 자연이 살아나고 있습니다. 필요하지 않은 여행을 하지 않고 정작 중요한 일에 집중하게 되었습니다. 개인 시간을 충분히 가짐으로 천천히 가는 삶의 여유를 누리게 되었습니다. 이제 조만간 효과적인 백신이 개발된다 해도 온라인 세상에 적응이 되어 사람들은 과거로 돌아가기를 원하지 않을 수도 있습니다. COVID-19 사태는 생태계, 도시환경, 국제질서, 경제활동 등 많은 면에서 큰 변화를 초래하고 있습니다.

우리가 재앙 가운데 있을 때에는 그 재앙이 영원히 계속될 것 같은 생각이 듭니다. 그러나 현재의 COVID-19 사태도 반드시 끝이 납니다. 역사상 영원히 지속된 전염병은 없었기 때문입니다. 더 중요한 이유는 성경에 기록된 예수님의 약속 때문입니다. "오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라 하시니라"(행1:8) "또 이르시되 너희는 온 천하에 다니며 만민에게 복음을 전파하라"(막16:15) "예수께서 나아와 말씀하여 이르시되 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니 그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라"(마 28:18-20). 예수님의 제자들은 온 천하에 다니며 복음을 전파하도록 명령 받았습니다. 증인이 되도록 명령 받았습니다. 가서 세례를 베풀도록 명령 받았습니다. 그러므로 온 천하에 다니며 복음을 전할 수 있는 환경이 반드시 다시 만들어질 것입니다. Post Corona 시대가 반드시 올 것입니다. 물론 그 Post Corona 시대는 코로나 사태 이전과 같지는 않을 것입니다. 또 다른 전염병의 위협과 가능성이 상존할 것이며 그러기에 온라인과 오프라인이 공존하는 시대가 될 것입니다. 사람 간의 실제적인 만남이 대폭 축소되고, 온라인 미팅이 주도하는 시대가 올 것입니다. 이러한 Post Corona 시대를 생각하며 우리는 현재 준비를 해야 합니다. 이러한 거대한 도전 앞에서 우리는 어떤 방향을 잡아야 할까요? 우리가 어떻게 효과적으로 현재 어려움을 이기며 앞으로 올 Post Corona 시대를 준비할 수 있을까요?

첫째, 사랑의 하나님이 역사의 주관자라는 사실을 믿고 감사하며 겸손한 마음을 가져야겠습니다. 이사야 55:9는 말합니다. "이는 하늘이 땅보다 높음 같이 내 길은 너희의 길보다 높으며 내 생각은 너희의 생각보다 높으니라." 우리는 땅에서 보지만 하나님은 하늘에서 보십니다. 하나님은 모든 것을 아시고 홀로 모든 일을 계획하십니다. 하나님은 하고자 하시는 뜻을 못 행하심이 없으십니다. 이 하나님은 우리를 사랑하사 독생자까지 내어주신 우리 아버지이십니다. 우리는 이 하나님을 범사에 믿고 감사해야 합니다. 공중의 새 한 마리도 하나님의 뜻이 없으면 떨어지지 않습니다. 하물며 전 세계를 강타하는 COVID-19에 어찌 하나님의 뜻이 없겠습니까? 그러면, 그 뜻이 무엇일까요? 여러 가지가 있겠지만 무엇보다 현대 과학문명으로 교만해진 인간들을 겸손하게 하시는 것임을 믿습니다. 수백 층의 바벨탑과 같은 고층 건물을 지으며 사람을 우주에 올려 보내지만, 인간은 실상 눈에 보이지 않는 바이러스 앞에서 철저히 무력한 존재임을 알게 하십니다. 인간은 바람이요 먼지와 같은 존재임을 알게 하십니다. 이와 같이 섭리하시는 하나님 앞에 우리는 그 동안의 교만을 철저히 회개하고 겸손한 마음을 회복해야겠습니다. 겸손이 복입니다. 하나님은 교만한 자를 대적하시되 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 베푸십니다. 겸손이 거룩함이요 겸손이 믿음입니다. 겸손이 없으면 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없습니다. 이번 COVID-19 사태는 하나님께서 우리를 사랑하사 선한 징계를 하시는 것입니다. 우리가 이를 믿고 감사하며 겸손으로 허리를 동이기를 기도합니다.

둘째, 인간의 힘을 믿기보다 그리스도를 믿어야겠습니다. 예수님은 12제자들을 세우시고 그들과 3년간 동고동락하셨습니다. 그들을 교회의 기초요 복음역사의 주역들로 세우고자 하셨습니다. 그러나 그들은 예수님의 집중적인 훈련을 받았음에도 불구하고 그다지 변화되지 않았습니다. 최후의 만찬 자리에서까지 누가 크냐고 서로 다투었습니다. 예수님을 절대로 버리지 않겠다고 맹세한 그들이었지만 예수님이 십자가에 달리실 때 거의 다 도망을 가버렸습니다. 이런 그들의 문제가 무엇이었습니까? 자기들의 힘으로 주님을 따르고자 하였기 때문이었습니다. 예수님은 이런 그들의 연약함을 이미 아셨고 성령을 약속하셨습니다. 예루살렘을 떠나지 말고 아버지의 약속하신 성령을 기다리라고 하셨습니다. 마침내 성령이 강림하시고 그들 안에 내주하셨습니다. 내주하신 성령은 그들을 능력 있게 사용하기 시작하셨습니다. 성령께서 그들을 어떻게 사용하셨는지는 사도행전이 잘 말씀해 주고 있습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 세상 끝날까지 항상 함께 있으리라고 약속하셨습니다(마 28:20). 예수님은 그의 약속대로 그를 믿는 제자들과 항상 함께 계십니다. 어떻게 함께 계실까요? 성령으로 함께 하십니다. 성령은 예수님의 영입니다. 복음 역사를 친히 이루어 가시는 그리스도의 영이십니다. 그리스도께서는 약속하신 대로 항상 우리 안에 거하십니다. "예수 그리스도께서 너희 안에 계신 줄을 너희가 스스로 알지 못하느냐 그렇지 않으면 너희는 버림받은 자니라."(고후13:5b).

COVID-19로 인해 잠시 숨을 고르면서, 우리는 그 동안 너무 우리가 나선 것이었던 것은 아니었던가 하는 생각을 하게 됩니다. 하나님의 역사를 너무 나의 힘으로, 우리 힘으로 섬긴 것을 발견합니다. 기독교 2천년 역사 가운데 하나님은 우리 모임을 선교 열정이 뜨거운 모라비안 선교회와 같은 모임 중의 하나로 쓰셨습니다. 그러나 젊은이들의 열정으로 충만하여 우리 각자 안에 계신 그리스도, 지금도 교회 공동체 가운데 계신 그리스도를 의지하지 않고 우리의 인간적인 열심으로만 섬긴 것이 아닌가 생각하게 됩니다. 우리 각자가 그리스도를 닮은 겸손하고 거룩한 사람들로 변화되기를 바라기보다 대량생산주의, 성공지상주의만을 추구한것은 아닌가 생각하게 됩니다. COVID-19 사태는 우리로 하여금 하나님의 복음 역사의 주체는 우리가 아니라 성령이심을 인정하게 하십니다. 우리 자신의 삶도 내가 사는 것이 아니요 내 안에 그리스도가 사는 삶을 회복하고자 하는 소원을 갖게 됩니다. 물론 우리는 열심을 내야 합니다. 그러나 그 열심은 성 어거스틴이 말한 바와 같이 자신의 무력함을 철저히 인정하고, 오직 그리스도를 의지하는 믿음에서 나온 순종으로서의 열심이 되어야 할 것입니다. "하나님께서 보내신 이를 믿는 것이 하나님의 일이니라"(요6:29). 죄인된 우리를 구원하신 하나님의 한량없는 은혜를 새기며 지금도 죄 덩어리인 우리에게 베푸시는 은혜를 감사하기를 기도합니다. 우리 안에 내주하시는 그리스도를 의지하는 믿음의 법을 실제적으로 배워야겠습니다. 믿음은 우리의 혼과 영의 세계를 연결하는 감각기관입니다. 믿음으로 그리스도의 생명이 우리 안에서 날마다 더 왕성하게 하여 주시길 기도합니다. 이미 십자가에 죽은 나의 옛 자아가 아니라 그리스도께서 우리의 삶을 살아가는 것을 경험하며 누리길 기도합니다. 그리스도의 영께서 우리 공동체 안에서 능력 있게 역사하기를 기도하며 또 그와 같이 이루시는 것을 볼 수 있기를 기도합니다.

셋째, 적극적으로 온라인 중심의 패러다임을 받아들이며 소수의 사람들을 제자양성 해야겠습니다. 온라인 중심의 패러다임은 거역할 수 없는 시대 흐름입니다. 불편하다고 멀리할 것이 아니라 적극적인 자세로 수용하고 배우며 모바일과 영상 콘텐츠를 잘 배우고 활용해야겠습니다. 전도와 교육, 홍보와 제자양성도 온라인을 잘 활용할 수 있어야 합니다. 우리가 소유하고 있는 스마트 폰이나 랩톱을 능숙하게 사용하며 소수의 사람을 제자양성 하도록 해야겠습니다. 온라인 시대로 변화됨으로 말미암아 우리에게 더 많은 개인 시간이 주어졌습니다. 이는 하나님의 은혜입니다. 우리는 이 시간을 선용하여 성경읽기와 암송, 묵상과 기도, 좋은 신앙서적 독서 등을 통해 영적으로 성장할 수 있습니다. 또한 자녀들을 사랑과 진리로 양육하는 가운데 그들이 좋은 제자가 되도록 섬겨야 합니다. 자녀들은 우리의 사랑의 대상이요 가장 중요한 선교자원입니다. 하나님 나라의 소망입니다. 이들이 말씀과 기도를 통해 우리의 다음 세대를 잇는 예수님의 제자들이 되길 기도합니다. 더 나아가 소 그룹 모임을 통한 제자 양성을 꾸준히 섬겨야겠습니다. 대부분의 나라에서 많은 사람들이 모이는 것이 허락되지 않고 있습니다. 그러나 점차로 소규모 그룹은 모이는 것이 가능해지고 있습니다. 소셜 디스탄싱은 모두와 거리를 두라는 것은 아닙니다. 모르는 사람과의 거리를 띄우라는 것입니다. 우리는 잘 알고 있는 가족들과 제자들과는 항상 가까이 할 수 있습니다. 최근에 세계 본부에서는 YouTube 등을 사용한 다방면의 온라인 콘텐츠 개발을 추진하고 있습니다. 또한 On Line forum 을 통해 선교 동역자님들이 영적인 무장을 하는 것을 돕고자 계획하고 있습니다. 우리가 실제적인 만남뿐만 아니라 이러한 인터넷 네트워크를 통해 소 그룹 제자양성을 꾸준히 이루어 나가야 하겠습니다.

넷째, 실제적인 어려움을 당하고 있는 동역자들을 돌아보아야겠습니다. 여러 동역자님들이 COVID-19에 감염되어 고난을 당했습니다. 드물긴 하지만 소천하신 분들도 있습니다. 이러한 고난 가운데도 동역자님들의 기도와 실제적인 도움과 사랑으로 회복이 된 경우가 많이 있었습니다. 의사, 간호사 동역자님들은 지금도 고난이 많습니다. 전염병의 일선 현장에서 생명을 살리기 위해 사투를 벌이고 있는 의료진 동역자님들을 하나님께서 보호하시고 힘주시길 기도합니다. 또한 그간 북미와 유럽 등 세계 여러 동역자님들이 희생적으로 구제금을 보내주셨습니다. 어떤 가정 교회 지부는 감당하기 어려울 정도로 많이 보내주셨습니다. 그간 동역자님들이 본부에 보내주신 총 구제금은 약 235,000 불입니다. 이 중에 4월 초순에 전세계 44명의 동역자들에게 그 분들의 경제적 상황을 감안하여 총 111,000 불을 보내드렸고 5월 하순 2차 구제에 총 31명의 동역자들에게 약 45,000 불을 보내드렸습니다. 여려 동역자님들이 도리어 구제받기를 거절하며 본인들보다 더 어려운 동역자들을 돕기를 바란다는 아름다운 요청들도 있었습니다. 또 지원을 받는 분들 모두 하나님을 찬양하며 우리 UBF 공동체 식구들에게 깊은 감사의 마음을 전해주기를 부탁하셨습니다. "그가 재물을 흩어 빈궁한 자들에게 주었으니 그의 의가 영구히 있고 그의 뿔이 영광 중에 들리리로다."(시112:9) 구제 물질 보다 그 물질에 담겨있는 사랑은 영구한 의가 됨을 믿습니다. COVID-19 사태가 지속되리라 보기에 계속하여 구제금을 아껴가면서 꼭 필요한 곳에 지원을 하고자 합니다. 이 지면을 통해 구제금을 보내주신 분들 및 지부에게 다시 한 번 진심으로 감사를 드리며 또 계속하여 기도와 지원을 부탁드립니다. 경제 활동이 어려워지면서 많은 사람들이 실직하고 있습니다. 특히 20대 30대의 실업이 큰 사회문제로 대두되고 있습니다. 이러한 것이 당분간이기는 하지만 당사자들에게는 너무나 힘든 일들입니다. 하나님을 사랑하는 것은 실제적으로 주변에 어려움을 당하고 있는 동역자들을 사랑하는 데서 나타납니다(요일 4:20b). 우리가 계속하여 헌신적으로 어려움을 당하고 있는 분들을 나 자신을 돌아보듯이 돌아보기를 기도합니다.

다섯째, 주님 오실 날이 가까웠음을 알고 깨어 기도해야겠습니다. 로마서 13:11,12 절은 말씀합니다. "또한 너희가 이 시기를 알거니와 자다가 깰 때가 벌써 되었으니 이는 이제 우리의 구원이 처음 믿을 때보다 가까웠음이라 밤이 깊고 낮이 가까웠으니 그러므로 우리가 어둠의 일을 벗고 빛의 갑옷을 입자." 재앙의 시대가 깊어질수록 사람들의 마음은 가난해지고 또 불안해합니다. 이러한 시대에 우리 각자가 이 시대를 비추는 사랑과 진리의 빛으로 살아가야 하겠습니다. 재앙 가운데 낙담하지 않고 도리어 주님의 나라에 대한 불타는 비전과 소망을 갖고 이 시대에 희망의 메시지를 전해야겠습니다. 어느 학자는 지구환경 파괴 속도를 볼 때 우리가 이 지구상의 마지막 인류가 될지도 모른다고 합니다. 전 세계적인 COVID-19 사태는 주님이 오실 날이 가까워진 사인임에 틀림이 없습니다. 주님의 말씀이 다가옵니다. "이런 일이 되기를 시작하거든 일어나 머리를 들라 너희 속량이 가까웠느니라 하시더라 이에 비유로 이르시되 무화과나무와 모든 나무를 보라 싹이 나면 너희가 보고 여름이 가까운 줄을 자연히 아나니 이와 같이 너희가 이런 일이 일어나는 것을 보거든 하나님의 나라가 가까이 온 줄을 알라" (눅21:28-31). 세계본부에서는 현재 24시간 기도 릴레이 운동을 전개하고 있고 많은 분들이 동참하고 있습니다. 우리가 이 시대의 파수꾼으로 머리를 들고 합심하여 또한 개인적으로 열심히 기도하는 종들이 되기를 기도합니다. 하나님께서 이 모든 재앙 가운데 선을 이루시고 큰 영광 받으실 것을 믿고 감사를 드립니다.

결론적으로, 현재의 재앙은 하나님의 때가 되면 반드시 끝이 납니다. 우리는 온라인 시대로 패러다임이 바뀌는 Post Corona 시대를 준비해야 합니다. 새로운 환경에서도 우리 각자가 먼저 그리스도의 영이 충만한 사람이 되어 믿음으로 예수님의 제자들을 양성하는 일에 더욱 힘쓰기를 기도합니다. 

주님의 은혜가 함께 하시길 기도합니다.
